			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Screening Test Called the A1c Assay Allows More Convenient Diagnosis.</p>
<p>Diabetes experts on Friday urged a switch to a diagnostic test for the disease that&#8217;s more useful to primary care doctors and more convenient for patients because it doesn&#8217;t require fasting. </p>
<p><img src="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/a1c-graph-260x300.gif" alt="A1C Graph" title="A1C Graph" width="260" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-813" />An international panel recommended that a test known as the hemoglobin A1c assay be the new standard test for diabetes. In the past, this test has primarily been used to monitor if diabetes treatment is working. However, the committee &#8212; which unveiled its recommendations at this weekend&#8217;s American Diabetes Association meeting in New Orleans, La. &#8212; said the A1c test&#8217;s long-term measurement of chronic blood sugar control problems provides a better diagnosis than current &#8220;snapshot&#8221; tests. </p>
<p>The test has not been adopted by all doctors for diagnostic purposes. Many of them prefer to rely first on the tried-and-true techniques such as the standard fasting plasma glucose test (FPG) and the less common oral glucose tolerance test &#8212; tests that the A1c screening would unseat as the new standard.</p>
<p>Still, other physicians have welcomed the new screening. Dr. Joel Zonszein, director of the Clinical Diabetes Center at Montefiore Medical Center in New York, said many colleagues have been &#8220;waiting years for this to happen.&#8221;</p>
<p>Proponents favor the A1c because it measures average blood glucose over the preceding two to three months, rather than just at one point in time, the researchers said. </p>
<p>&#8220;A1c values vary less than fasting plasma glucose values, and the assay for A1c has technical advantages compared with the glucose assay,&#8221; said Dr. David M. Nathan of Massachusetts General Hospital, who chaired the expert committee.</p>
<p>&#8220;Also, testing for diabetes using A1c is more convenient and easier for patients who will no longer be required to perform a fasting or oral glucose tolerance test,&#8221; Nathan added.</p>

<p>The recommendations &#8212; made jointly by the American Diabetes Association, the International Diabetes Federation, and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes &#8212; were published online today in Diabetes Care and will appear in the July issue of the journal.</p>

<p><strong>Can Doctors Agree on A1c?</strong><br />
Many primary care doctors already use A1c screening as a first-line tool for diagnosis, while others use it in combination with FPG. One reason for caution about the A1c in the past, doctors said, has been concern about standardization in A1c screenings &#8212; that is, whether doctors agree that a given result indicates that a patient has diabetes.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Something you need to keep in mind and never forget is that when you exercise, you are training for  life.  You still may spend an hour a day in the gym, although that will still leave another 23 hours or so for your muscles to function without using any fancy equipment.</p>
<p>Whenever you do any type of exercise, the movement of your body during the exercise is known as the range of motion.  The more difficult the range of motion is, the more effective the exercise will be, because your body has to work twice as hard to  perform the movement.</p>
<p><object width="425" height="350" data="http://www.youtube.com/v/ack2rdbiHEE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ack2rdbiHEE" /></object></p>
<p>Take for the instance the classic dumbbell bicep curl.  If you aren&#8217;t familiar with the exercise, it is performed by standing up straight with your palms facing forward, and a pair of dumbbells held down by your sides.  You&#8217;ll contract your biceps to bring the dumbbells up to your shoulder height, then repeat the exercise as many times as you wish.</p>
<p>Using that same movement for exercise on a bicep curl machine, you should sit down, brace your  upper arms on a pad, grasp 2 handles that are in front of you, then perform the same movement as above to move the handles in an upward motion.</p>
<p>Now, looking at the muscle contractions in this exercise, you are contracting essentially your biceps if you are using the curl machine, and that is pretty much all you are doing.  When you use the machine you are sitting down, which will limit just how much your shoulders give.  The machine has several muscles used in this exercise limited to the biceps, as well as the muscles in your forearms and fingers.</p>
<p>Most of the time, when using machine weights, you will always be limited as to what type of exercise you can perform.  You must always follow a strict procedure, which is pretty much the same with free weights.  Unlike free weights, machine  weights offer a certain degree of resistance.</p>

<p>One of the best thing about free weights is the fact that you move a little chuck around to  select the weight you want to use.  Instead  of dragging it over to your exercise area, you simply select it on the machine.  When  you are tired during a workout, this can be a blessing.</p>
<p>A lot of people argue in the fact that free weights are the best for your body.  While this  is normally true, many people out there feel that machine weights are the best.  There are pros and cons with both machines, although free  weights have been around a lot longer and have been proven time after time to achieve dramatic results.</p>
<p>Body builders for example, have used free  weights over the years to build very impressive bodies.  If you ask most of them about machine weights, they would probably laugh at you and tell you that you need to quit joking around.</p>
<p>In a nutshell, free weights will use more of your muscles than the machines do, which makes them more effective overall.  This doesn&#8217;t mean that the machines are a waste of use, as they offer some great advantages.  In some cases, it is best to stabilize the muscles that are being used in a movement, which is where machines are the best to use.</p>
<p>The decision on which to use for you should be based on what you hope to achieve with lifting weights and where you plan to use the equipment, such as home or at a gym.  Both systems are great for your body, although the free weights are best to use if you want the best possible workout, and always ensure that your muscles are getting the right workouts they need.</p>

<p>We all try and stick to choosing healthy items when grocery shopping or eating out, but how well do we really know our foods? Discover how to find out about reading between the lines, what to look out for in labels and how to dine out healthily.</p>
<p>When shopping in your local supermarket, it&#8217;s very easy to be attracted to colourful aisles filled with crisps and chocolates. It can sometimes take a lot of will power to resist grabbing a few treats&#8230;especially if you are food shopping on an empty stomach!</p>
<p><q>99% Fat Free &#8211; but can you really believe it? Watch the video and learn the truth</q>So the logical choice is to head for the aisles that sell &#8216;healthy&#8217; food. But how genuinely healthy is the food that you are buying? It looks healthy, it sounds healthy, but you may actually find that it contains &#8216;hidden&#8217; fats, salts and sugars. In short, anything BUT healthy!</p>
<p>Fat free? Sugar free? Calorie free?</p>
<p>Phrases such as &#8216;fat free&#8217; and sugar free&#8217; sound great in theory, but a closer inspection may be needed. A claim such as &#8216;fat free&#8217; usually means that in order for the item to be &#8216;fat free&#8217;, something else has to be added to make it taste edible.</p>
<p>[relatedposts]So check the label at the back to see what has been added to make up for the lack of fat. The product could be significantly high in sugar, and so, even if the product is fat free, it will probably be packed full of calories. The same goes for products boasting a low number of calories or no sugar at all. Again, check the back label because the fat content may be very high.</p>

<p>Also check to see whether the nutritional information relates to the portion size or if it&#8217;s per 100g. When cooking a meal, think in terms of portion size to get a better idea of how much fat and calories each person will really be consuming</p>

<p>The Swiss ball is a relatively new addition to the gym, and many people are either unsure of what to do with it, or scared of looking foolish on it or even falling off it! But this ball is no passing trend, and you would be wise to make friends with it as it is an amazing exercise tool with many benefits.</p>
<p>When working out on the ball, which is unstable, your body needs to recruit additional muscles in order to stay balanced. This means that, for example, if you perform a bicep curl whilst sitting on the ball, your body will recruit your deep stabilising abdominal muscles (also known as core muscles), thereby toning your tummy while you tone your arms.</p>
<p>A primary benefit of exercising with an exercise ball as opposed to exercising directly on a hard flat surface is that the body responds to the instability of the ball to remain balanced, engaging many more muscles to do so. Those muscles become stronger over time to keep balance. Most frequently, the core body muscles &#8211; the abdominal muscles and back muscles &#8211; are the focus of exercise ball fitness programs.</p>
<p>In addition to sculpting and toning the body, balance training is an important part of an exercise regime, as it can improve the quality of your day-to-day living and reduce the risk of injury through falls.</p>

<p>Lack of flexibility is now seen to be a major cause of general health problems and sports injury and is being linked to everything from stress. back pain, and even osteoarthritis. It also means that nagging injuries, especially around your joints take longer to heal.</p>
<p>Latest studies show that up to 60 percent of the general population with bad backs and knees have tight hamstrings and hips and the main cause is a lack of flexibility.</p>
<p><strong>Active-Isolated Stretching (AI)</strong><br />
Olympians have been employing Active-Isolated Stretching (AI) now for about 10 years, but it has only recently been brought to the public’s attention.</p>
<p>I have used this technique on my clients for quite a while now with great success, while adding renewed life and spring to tired out muscles. AI stretching prevents injury, as conventional stretching can cause real harm such as muscle pulls and tears.</p>
<p>AI stretching does what stretching is supposed to do; it transports oxygen to sore muscles and quickly removes toxins so recovery is faster. It also works as a deep massage technique because it activates muscle fibres during the actual stretch.</p>
<p><strong>How to Stretch</strong><br />
Before stretching, dress in loose clothing and try and acquire a five-foot length of rope and tie a loop in the end. The purpose of this is to loop the end of rope around the exercising appendage to squeeze the last couple of inches of stretch from the exercise.</p>

<p><q>it transports oxygen to sore muscles and quickly removes toxins so recovery is faster</q>Find a comfortable place to stretch either on your bed, a carpeted floor or on a mat.<br />
Isolate the muscle or group you want to stretch then contract the muscle opposite. This causes the isolated muscle or group to relax straight away and when it does it is ready to stretch.</p>
<p>Gently and quickly stretch the isolated muscle until it can’t be stretched any further; now give yourself a gentle pull with your hands or rope. Go as far as you can and then hold the stretch for no more than 2 seconds then release, do this for a total of 5 repetitions on the isolated muscle or group.</p>
<p>The reason for just a 2-second stretch is because when a muscle realizes that it is being forced into a stretch it contracts to protect itself from being overstretched. If you can beat this contraction you’ll be well on the way to a greater Range of Motion.</p>
<p>Remember to hold for no more than 2 seconds, release, return to the normal position and repeat for the five repetitions. Try not to have any hesitations between stretches and make it as fluid as possible. Try to stretch every day if possible, remember to:</p>
<ul>
<li>Work one target muscle at a time.</li>
<li>Contract the muscle that is opposite the targeted muscle, which will relax in preparation of its stretch.</li>
<li>Stretch it gently and quickly.</li>
<li>Release it before it realizes that it has been stretched and goes into its protective contraction.</li>
</ul>
<p>Below are two exercises that can be done straight away even while you are at work to stretch that tension and stress from of your body.</p>
<p>1. Lie down on the floor with your buttocks against a wall and your legs straight up the wall. Slowly flex your toes towards your knees, hold for two seconds and repeat five times.  This will loosen up your lower back and stretch your hamstrings and hips giving instant relief for tired backs.</p>
<p>This exercise can be done while at the office anytime you start to feel that stress and tension building up.</p>
<p>2. Sitting in a chair and putting one leg out straight, flex your toes towards your knee, now lean towards that foot, stretching your hands towards it and letting your head and shoulders follow, hold for two seconds and repeat five times.  This will create a stretch right across your lower back and neck.</p>
<p>A flexible body is:</p>
<ul>
<li>More efficient</li>
<li>More easily trained for strength and endurance</li>
<li>Enjoys more range of motion</li>
<li>Stays balanced more easily and is less prone to injury</li>
<li>Recovers from workouts more quickly, and feels better.</li>
</ul>

<p>Swiss ball Dumbbell Exercises are a fantastic way to improve core strength while you’re doing what you would normally do anyway. By using dumbbells as free weights, and choosing the Swiss ball instead of a traditional bench, you activate more muscles as you do your weight training. Activating more muscle should burn more fat. Having a stronger core improves posture and just makes you look better. </p>
<p>Always use a Swiss ball when you’re doing your dumbbell exercises.</p>

<p><span class="drop-cap">T</span>o lose weight and get in shape you must have a good diet and exercise regularly to burn fat. The first thing you must understand about exercise is that just because you are burning calories does not mean you are burning fat. Your main focus when you exercise should be losing body fat, and you can’t lose body fat just from burning calories. When we exercise, our bodies will start burning calories, but the calories that are burned are the calories from carbohydrates in our system. In order to burn calories from your stored fat, your body requires the presence of oxygen.</p>
<p>There is a certain amount of oxygen that your body needs in order to start burning fat and the only way for you to measure the amount needed for your own body is to keep up with your target heart rate during exercise. Please understand that if you continue to only burn calories from carbohydrates, you will lose mostly “water weight” which leads to a decrease in your metabolism.</p>
<p><q>Weight training is an anaerobic activity that will cause you to burn more calories than aerobic exercise</q>Also, think of the calories that are burned from carbohydrates as your energy calories. If you lose too much energy calories then your muscles will not receive enough energy to increase your metabolism which indirectly burn fat. Therefore you must increase your calorie intake when you are on an exercise program to replace your burned energy calories.</p>
<p><strong>Burning Fat Calories during exercise</strong><br />
During aerobic exercise, your body goes through several stages before it reaches the point where you are burning fat. You will hear people say that you are only burning sugar (carbohydrates) not fat during the first 10 minutes of exercise. This is true to a certain extent. I say this because you will continue to burn sugar past the 10 minute mark if you are not working out hard enough for your body to want more oxygen; or you are working out too hard and you can’t supply your body with enough oxygen for fat burning. When you exercise you must move at a steady pace (not too fast, not too slow) so your body will utilize your stored fat (not carbohydrates or sugar) as its energy source. Also remember that just because you reached the fat burning stage does not mean you will stay there. Staying at the fat burning stage once again depends on if you are moving at a pace that is right for your body. Make sure that you are within your target heart rate range.</p>

The only way for you to continue to burn fat calories hours after you have finished working out is through the anaerobic exercise of weight training. Weight training is the key to burning fat at rest. Weight training is an anaerobic activity that will cause you to burn more calories than aerobic exercise. The calories that you are burning during weight training exercises are mostly calories from carbohydrates (meaning you must eat even more calories per day for energy); but the calories you burn at rest are mostly calories from fat. The reason you are burning fat at rest is because weight training increases your metabolism which uses your stored fat as energy.</p>
<p>To make your body the ultimate fat burning machine you must do aerobic (cardio) and anaerobic (weight training) exercises.</p>
