Strength training has several powerful benefits and it needs to be a part of any fitness program. Here are the top 5 benefits of strength training.

1. Reduces health risks. Strength training helps prevent cardiovascular disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, low back pain, and certain types of cancer. Even if you already suffer from one of these ailments, strength training can help alleviate the ailment. Strength training also strengthens the immune system, making you less susceptible to colds and flus.

2. Keeps you strong. People who don’t exercise regularly can lose up to 80% of their strength by age 65. More than one-fourth of American men and two-thirds of American women over age 75 can’t lift an object heavier than 15 pounds. This loss of strength is not the normal result of aging, it’s primarily the result of a sedentary lifestyle. Strength training is the best way to prevent the loss of strength.

3. Strengthens bones. It’s estimated that over 200 million people worldwide suffer from osteoporosis. 30-50% of women and 15-30% of men will suffer a fracture related to osteoporosis in their lifetime. Bone loss parallels muscle loss, it’s primarily the result of a sedentary lifestyle. Consuming dairy products and taking calcium supplements is not enough. Bones not challenged by weight bearing exercise will become soft and brittle. Strength training will increase the strength and density of your bones more than any other type of exercise, and if you’ve already lost some bone, strength training can help restore some of it.

4. Decreases body fat. Strength training is just as important as aerobic exercise and healthy eating when it comes to losing body fat. Strength training builds lean muscle mass, and the more lean muscle mass you have the higher your metabolism will be. A higher metabolism causes your body to burn more fat throughout the day, even when you’re at rest.

5. Improves appearance. Strength training is the most effective way to build, shape, and define your body. Whether you want a leaner, more toned body, or a bigger, more powerful body, strength training will give you the look your after.

Building a strength training routine can be one of the trickiest parts of a fitness program. Ask 10 personal trainers what the best strength training routine is and you will get 10 different answers. Below are 7 must-know guidelines to use when building a strength training program. Each guideline provides the basic foundation that all strength training programs abide by. Learning the proper way to use free weights will greatly improve your strength, fitness, and health levels.

We cannot strength train a muscle today and tomorrow. We have to allow at least 24-36 hours of rest. Lifting on consecutive days leads to overtraining, muscle fatigue, and possible injury. All of our strength gains are made during the rest time!

We cannot spot reduce. This means if we want to lose weight in our stomach, doing 100 crunches a day will not make our stomach flab disappear. To reduce stomach fat, we need an overall reduction in body fat. Reducing overall body fat results from eating well, regular exercise, and proper rest.

We can spot tone. If we want bigger biceps, we can strength train for hypertrophy (fancy word for muscle growth). It is possible for us to focus on one specific muscle group. This is sometimes called targeted training. Studies have shown that machines isolate a muscle better than free weights.

Our strength training routines must be regular and consistent for results to take place. It took us years to put on the weight. We shouldn’t expect it to all fall off in three weeks. The best outcome from your fitness and strength training program should be a lifestyle change. Replace bad habits with healthy ones and reap the rewards.

Realize that our strength training routine must be changed every 4-6 weeks. This will prevent our body from hitting a plateau and it will keep things interesting. We can change our method, our exercise or our intensity level. Not changing our routine on a regular basis will eventually stop producing results. We will continually grow stronger as we progress with our fitness program. Be sure your body is challenged on every workout.

Our strength training routines must be built according to our specific goals. Specific goals may be: fat loss, hypertrophy, maintaining weight or adding bulk. Each goal will have a different method that is best suited for optimal results. Someone who is interested in losing body fat will strength train differently than someone looking to increase muscle bulk. Knowing what your specific goals are will aid in creating the best strength training program possible.

Our strength training routines must work all of the major muscle groups in our body 1-3 times per week. This includes our biceps, triceps, shoulders, chest, back, abs, quads, glutes, hamstrings and calves. Leaving out muscle groups will create an imbalance.

By using these 7 guidelines, anyone should be able to build a decent and effective program. The idea is to develop a safe strength training routine that provides us with major health and fitness benefits. Strength training has certainly increased in popularity over the past few years. Knowing how to build a strength training routine for our specific goals will move us one step closer to a fit body.

So you think that weight lifting is not for you, especially now that you are trying to lose weight? That
Read more...

So you think that weight lifting is not for you, especially now that you are trying to lose weight? That could be no farther from the truth. There has forever existed the unwarranted myth that women who weight train will get too bulky, masculine, and look unfeminine. The truth is that most women do not produce enough testosterone to even come close to that. So what are you waiting for?

Weight lifting and strength training have long been key elements to any successful fitness program. Simply doing cardiovascular activities alone will not get you the long term results you seek. And remember, permanent weight loss is not about the short term gratification of fitting into new jeans, but rather long term lifestyle changes that lead to a longer lasting, healthier life. Now that we have gotten past that, lets explore the true benefits of strength training, how to start correctly, and the impact it will have on your life-long fitness.

The benefits of strength training. Strength training helps build muscle mass, define muscle tone, and ultimately burn more fat. Yes, you have heard that a million times, but do you truly believe it? Muscle does not weigh more than fat. A pound of chips weighs the same as a pound of bricks – they are both one pound. It just takes a lot more chips to equal a pound than bricks. Relevance? A pound of muscle looks a lot nicer on your body than a pound of fat. You are leaner, toned, and can feel confident knowing that you are doing the best you can for your body. While cardiovascular activities such as walking, cycling, and running are important, adding a strength training component to your workout will help burn excess fat long after you actually leave the gym. Now that’s truly a plus!

A good strength training workout for weight loss should consist of lighter weights and more repetitions. First and foremost, however, you must always consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program. It is highly advantageous to go to a local gym and register for a one-week trial membership. Most clubs such as Powerhouse Gym or your local YMCA, give free trials and sessions with a personal trainer. In these tough economic times, you may want to learn from a pro in during the trial, and if you like, join the gym, if not, take your knowledge and apply it at home. Once you have learned the basics, remain consistent. Start with three 20 minute sessions each week. As your body gets stronger, increase the variety of exercises, amount of weight, then vary the number of repetitions. Please see the links section for more resources on weight lifting.

The lifelong benefits of strength training are immeasurable. You have the choice of being sedentary and immobile, which could be due in part to not properly taking care of and exercising your body, or being active and on the go because you took the time out for yourself and your health. Strength training now can help build good muscle density which will protect you against fractures and breaks in your retirement years. But don’t think weight lifting is just for the younger generation. Even seniors just starting out can reap the fruits of strength training, if you just start now!

(ARA) – Budget-minded families are looking to cut expenses that seem like a luxury, or even just frivolous — including gym memberships. Yet mounting evidence suggests that cutting out the gym may be exactly the wrong move for even the most cash-strapped family.

In its just-released report of annual health spending figures, published in the journal Health Affairs, the federal government confirmed that chronic illness accounts for 75 percent of all health spending. Yet exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight can significantly reduce your risks for chronic illness and your medical bills.

“To put that in financial terms, for every dollar you spend on wellness, you can save as much as five dollars or more on illness,” says Dr. Richard Kreider, director of the exercise and sport nutrition laboratory at Texas A&M University. He has studied the effectiveness of the Curves women’s fitness program for the past five years.

“The women in our studies have been able to lose weight, gain muscle strength, raise metabolism, and make significant medical improvements in blood pressure, resting heart rate and aerobic fitness,” Kreider says. “Many of them no longer suffer from the chronic conditions that cost them so much money for medications and doctor visits.”

This can add up to a bundle of savings. The Health Affairs report shows that the average annual out-of-pocket expense for someone with cancer is $8,411, but the good news is that regular exercise can help you avoid the disease and the costs associated with it. A major report by the American Institute for Cancer Research published in 2007 found that obesity plays a key role in increasing the risk for many cancers — including breast cancer — by as much as 60 percent. And a study just published in the journal Cancer found that obesity increased women’s risk for ovarian cancer by a whopping 80 percent.

The benefits go beyond reducing the risk of cancer. A recent landmark study by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota found that people who went to the gym at least eight times a month had significantly lower healthcare costs than those who did not. These frequent gym attendees had:

39 percent fewer emergency room visits

41 percent fewer hospital admissions

18 percent lower overall claims costs

The research, then, is clear. “Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight can save not only your life, but your money as well,” says Kreider. “Your health is your most precious asset, and not taking care of it is going to cost you more in the long run.”

So how can you get to the gym without breaking the bank? Many clubs are offering great deals on memberships because of the economy. Also, check with your health insurance provider to see if they have a wellness program that offers rebates on dues and membership fees. Some fitness centers, like Curves, have partnered with major health insurance and third-party providers, including Healthways SilverSneakers, AARP and Blue Cross Blue Shield, to make the cost of membership even more affordable.
