			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Megan Johnson did something at 33 that she&#8217;d dreamed of since college &#8211; she entered a bodybuilding, figure and fitness competition and placed a respectable seventh in the figure category. </p>
<p>What&#8217;s the big deal? In addition to her age &#8211; the average female figure contestant is about 28 &#8211; she&#8217;s a mom of four: Max, 7, and triplets Hank, Sam, and Sophia, 6. She also employed a rather unusual workout regimen for a competitive figure contestant.</p>
<p><a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/8820_B2.jpg" class="thickbox" title="Megan Johnson with her 4 children" rel="Megan"><img src="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/8820_B2-300x199.jpg" alt="Megan Johnson with her 4 children" title="Megan Johnson with her 4 children" width="300" height="199" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-980" /></a>&#8220;I gained 25 pounds in college,&#8221; says Johnson, &#8220;mostly because I&#8217;ve always hated cardio. Weights I would do, but I just wouldn&#8217;t do anything aerobic.&#8221;</p>
<p>When Max arrived, Johnson knew it was going to be even harder to lose weight unless she faced her cardio phobia. That&#8217;s when she found a local women&#8217;s-only fitness center whose philosophy combined strength training and cardio.</p>
<p>&#8220;I belonged to a serious weight-lifting gym and I had doubts,&#8221; says Johnson, &#8220;But I knew I would never realize my dream unless I changed tactics, so I quit my gym and jumped right in.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/8820_B3.jpg" class="thickbox" title="Megan Johnson's training results" rel="Megan"><img src="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/8820_B3-199x300.jpg" alt="Megan Johnson&#039;s training results" title="Megan Johnson&#039;s training results" width="199" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-982" /></a>Johnson checked her progress against a friend who was training for the same event. &#8220;She lifted weights and did cardio two to three hours a day, six days a week. I did my 30-minute workout, three to five days a week, and nothing else. Our results were comparable.&#8221; </p>
<p>Research supports Johnson&#8217;s experience. Addressing the American College of Sports Medicine recently, Dr. Richard Kreider presented the results of the 2008 Curves/Avon Fitness Study, which tracked 43,000 women through the 30-day challenge. Participants worked out at Curves three times a week and were encouraged to walk an additional 120 minutes a week. The women saw considerable decreases in weight, body fat, inches, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar. &#8220;It&#8217;s possible to make significant improvements with this type of program,&#8221; says Kreider.</p>

<p>Johnson took multivitamins and followed her gym&#8217;s eating plan. She loved the flexibility, meal plans and recipes. &#8220;I make the chili all the time,&#8221; she says.</p>
<p>&#8220;People think you have to work out for hours a day to get really fit,&#8221; says Johnson, &#8220;but I&#8217;ve proven to myself that&#8217;s not true. As a mom of four, I don&#8217;t have time even if I wanted to. And the good news is, if I give it my all during those 30 minutes, I don&#8217;t have to.&#8221;</p>
<h3>Megan&#8217;s Favorite Cozy Comfort Chili</h3>
<p>&#8220;I make this in batches of 25 servings and freeze in one-cup portions,&#8221; says Johnson. &#8220;Take one out, reheat, top with cheese and enjoy.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Ingredients:</strong><br />
Garlic, to taste<br />
Onion, to taste<br />
Celery, to taste<br />
Bell Pepper, to taste<br />
1 teaspoon oil<br />
3 ounces 95 percent lean ground beef<br />
1/2 can diced tomatoes, with juice<br />
1/4 cup black beans, cooked<br />
1/4 cup pinto beans, cooked<br />
1/4 cup kidney beans, cooked<br />
1/4 cup shredded low-fat cheese</p>
<p><strong>Directions:</strong><br />
Saute your favorite vegetables and spices (you can use unlimited amounts of them) in oil. Add lean ground beef and cook through. Stir in diced tomatoes with juice, black, pinto and kidney beans. Stir and cook until bubbly. Top with 1 ounce (1/4 cup) shredded low fat cheese. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My second most important piece of equipment for exercising and fat burning is a good quality heart rate monitor. If you want to increase the effectiveness of your exercise, get more out of each workout, and spend less time with better results, then you owe it to yourself to check out today&#8217;s heart rate monitors.</p>

The chest strap is worn around your chest (naturally), just a few centimeters below your breast. It contains an electronic sensor that is able to detect electrical activity of your heart and transmit it to the receiver, or brain of the machine &#8211; just like an ECG. The chest transmitter continually senses your heartbeat and constantly transmits that information to a display monitor, which is generally attached to your wrist like a watch.</p>
<p>The watch can be worn as a regular sports watch, and when not connected to the transmitter strap, will still give you time of day, alarms, stopwatch functions, etc.  </p>
<p>If you are planning to buy a quality heart rate monitor, one of the more popular manufacturers around is Polar. Polar technology has been around for two decades now and the company has achieved the status of being the industry leader in the heart rate monitors field. They have different series for heart rate monitors, ranging from beginners and intermediates to professional athletes. You can also choose your heart rate monitor from different categories, depending on what your needs are: Cardiac Rehab, Jogging, Cycling, Swimming (this includes a waterproof monitor-watch), Fitness, Weight Management and so forth.</p>
<p>You can of course purchase one of the lower-end models but low quality heart monitors can lead to inaccurate results and that sort of defeats the purpose of buying one &#8211; and what price do place on your health.</p>
<p><q>increase the effectiveness of your exercise and get more out of each workout</q>By monitoring your heart rate you can reduce the chance of injury from over training and know you are getting a great workout by staying in the &#8220;<a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">target zone</a>&#8220;, drastically increasing the efficiency and benefits of your workouts. </p>
<p>One of the first things you need to know when using a heart rate monitor is what your maximum heart rate is.  The standard formula used is to subtract your age from 220, however, we also provide a more accurate method, the <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">Karvonen formula</a> .  You can then calculate at what percentage of maximum you should be exercising at.</p>

<p>When doing cardiovascular training, research says exercising at <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">60-70%</a> of your maximum heart rate will be best for fat loss and to build endurance, while exercising in the <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">70-80%</a> of maximum range will increase your fitness.</p>
<p>As I tend to focus primarily on cycling for my cardio/fat burning workouts I purchased a Polar S710 cycling heart rate monitor. I also purchased the speed/distance and cadence sensors that go with this unit and the infra-red serial connector for uploading my exercise information to a computer.</p>
<p>Although it seemed like an expensive purchase at the time, it does provide me with an incredible amount of information (see images below) allowing me to specifically tailor my exercise programs to maximise my fat burning. I have been using this Polar heart rate monitor for the past 8 years, so if I amortize the initial cost over that time frame, then it is quite affordable &#8211; working out at less than $100.00 per year.</p>
<p>It certainly pays to shop around for a good deal, especially on the internet. If my memory serves me correctly I purchased my Polar heart rate monitor and cycling sensors through the internet from Scotland of all places.</p>

<p>The American Heart Association recommends the use of fish oils to help your hearts performance as long as you keep your dosage under 3 grams per day, suggesting an amount roughly between 0.5 to 1.8 grams per day. Clinical trials conducted have shown that Omega 3 fish oils can reduce cardiovascular events including heart attacks, strokes, and even death.</p>
<p> Also, research has shown that fish oils can help decrease the risk of arrhythmias, decrease triglyceride levels, decrease the growth rate of atherosclerotic plaque, and even slightly lower blood pressure! With all these facts, there is no doubt that the regular and responsible use of Omega 3 fish oils from supplements can be of great benefit to your health.</p>

<p>A lot of people who are overweight have or are at risk of developing hypertension and other cardiovascular problems, so the fact that green tea does not put pressure on the heart makes it a good choice. Ephidrine is not usually recommended if you are in this group but green tea is considered a safe option. It means that you can gradually increase your exercise levels without increasing your risk of heart problems. </p>
<p><q>Green tea has the added benefit of containing powerful antioxidants that may be beneficial to your health in many ways</q>There are only two ways to lose weight: one way is by eating less (consuming fewer calories) and the other is by increasing expenditure of energy (using up more calories). Green tea works by increasing output and this can be by around 4%. Most scientists believe that this is caused by the high quantity of catechin that is in the tea and its extract.</p>
<p>Green tea has the added benefit of containing powerful antioxidants that may be beneficial to your health in many ways, strengthening the immune system and protecting against disease. </p>
<p>Keep in mind that green tea does contain caffeine so you should cut out coffee and other forms of tea while you are taking it. Decaffeinated green tea is not recommended because the chemical processes that are used to remove the caffeine may destroy the beneficial properties of the plant. </p>
<p>At the same time you will need to exercise control in what you eat. If you eat more to compensate for the calories that are burnt by the tea, you will not lose any weight. Keeping to the same calorific intake that you have now and taking green tea should result in gradual weight loss and better energy levels over a few weeks. You can of course increase the speed of this by reducing calorie consumption and/or increasing exercise. </p>

<p>If you want to start a weight training exercise program, you really need to be working with someone who knows what they are doing and can show you the correct techniques. There are many options available. You can go to the gym, use free weights at home with a buddy, or get one of those machines, but if you do not do your weight training exercise with proper safety precautions, it is quite possible for you to get seriously injured.</p>
<p>If you are new to weight training or are not self-motivated, then I recommend doing your weight training exercise at the gym. There are several good reasons for this, and I will go ahead and tell you some of the very best ones. First of all, you can get a spot at the gym. Of all of the weight training exercise injuries, most of them could have been avoided with a proper spotter. This is especially true with free weights which can injure or even kill you if you are forced to drop them based on muscle fatigue. This is the most important reason to go to the gym, but it is really far from the only one. </p>
<p>The fact is that it is easier to psyche yourself up for your weight training exercise  when you do go to the gym. With all of those people around you dedicating their time to getting in shape, there is just no way you will feel like slacking off in your weight training program while you are at the gym. Many gyms even have personal trainers available, who will help you to meet your personal best, by working you harder than you will yourself, and helping to chart your goals. They can even suggest which weight training exercises you should use and how many, to strengthen the muscle groups which interest you.</p>
<p>Before you start doing weight training exercise, however, you should do some cardiovascular stuff. While you can get by quite well without weight training exercise, cardio is absolutely essential to your health. You will live longer, be healthier, and happier, and even have more energy if you do some aerobic activities every day to keep you active. We do not stay young forever, but those of us who get adequate aerobic exercises do stay young for longer than those who do not. Once you start doing that, then you can add your weight training exercise program.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Cholesterol is a wax-like substance that is present in the cell membranes of body tissues and is carried in the blood plasma. It is a sterol; a combination of alcohol and steroid and is also called atherosclerotic plaque. The body requires cholesterol in order to form and sustain cell membranes, help with the production of bile and aid the metabolism of fat soluble vitamins.</p>
<p>Over time, cholesterol builds up on the artery walls and this condition is known as atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis was thought to be an affliction of the elderly until the 1950&#8242;s when American pathologists were sent to Korea by the Pentagon to study the bodies of servicemen who died during the conflict. They autopsied around 2000 soldiers and found that approximately 75% had waxy, yellow deposits on the walls of their arteries; a shocking statistic considering the average age of the soldiers was 21. Their findings astonished the scientific community as it highlighted the onset of heart disease in the very young.</p>
<p><strong>LDL and HDL Cholesterol</strong><br />
There are two different types of cholesterol; low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). HDL is commonly known as &#8216;good&#8217; cholesterol and LDL is recognised as &#8216;bad&#8217; cholesterol. LDL has been markedly linked with heart disease, whereas HDL is thought to reduce the chance of a heart attack. It has been estimated that approximately 25% of Americans are at risk from heart disease due to atherosclerosis, and around 10% have such high levels that doctors are left no choice than to prescribe cholesterol reducing drugs.</p>

There are a number of foods which are believed to significantly lower LDL cholesterol. Fiber-rich foods are said to be particularly beneficial and will not only lower &#8216;bad&#8217; cholesterol, but also help the bowel to function properly, lowering the risk of colon and bowel cancer. There are many other foods that can help the body fight back against these dangerous deposits.</p>
<ul>
<li>Fiber-rich foods, particularly oat bran, barley and wheat bran. They can be eaten as a cereal for breakfast and sprinkled onto other foods. Pearl barley can be added to soups. Apples and pears also have considerable amounts of soluble fiber and should be enjoyed on a daily basis</li>
<li><strong>Beans and pulses</strong> are high in fiber and low-fat. They also contain lecithin, a nutrient that lowers cholesterol. Try to incorporate kidney, fava, borlotti and other dried whole-foods into your diet; there are many different types of lentils and pulses that are delicious in soups and stews</li>
<li><strong>Avocado</strong> contains prolific amounts of monounsaturated fat, which helps to reduce LDL cholesterol and has many other health benefits including anti-cancer properties</li>
<li><strong>Raw carrots</strong> are rich in a fiber called pectin that is renowned for minimizing cholesterol. There are a number of fruits that also contain pectin, including; apples, citrus fruits, strawberries, raspberries and other red or black berries</li>
<li><strong>Shitake mushrooms</strong> are widely used by the Japanese and include a compound called lentinan, which not only lowers cholesterol, but is also thought to be anti-cancerous and may help to boost the immune system</li>
<li><strong>Garlic</strong> is a super food and is well known for its blood-thinning properties. It also contains a substance allicin which is thought to prevent the body retaining LDL cholesterol and research has shown that the equivalent of one clove per day can lessen &#8216;bad&#8217; cholesterol by 10-15% in the majority of people</li>
<li><strong>Root ginger</strong> has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries and has numerous health benefits. It can be added to stir-fry&#8217;s (using healthy sesame oil) and other vegetable dishes</li>
<li><strong>Nuts</strong> are naturally high in omega-3 fatty acids and are known to significantly reduce blood cholesterol; walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts and almonds are especially beneficial</li>
<li><strong>Sesame seeds</strong> are rich in phytosterols. These compounds are said to substantially lessen LDL cholesterol. Other foods containing phytosterols include; celery, lettuce, asparagus, spinach, tomatoes, ginger, squash and strawberries</li>
<li><strong>Safflower, canola, soybean, and olive oil</strong> are monounsaturated and are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids. Research indicates that they can decrease atherosclerotic plaque by up to 15% when eaten regularly</li>
<li><strong>Salmon, tuna, sardines and mackerel</strong> contain considerable amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, which have many health benefits and are essential for brain and eye function</li>
<li><strong>Prunes</strong> are a wonderful source of antioxidants and fiber, which is known to reduce LDL cholesterol</li>
<li><strong>Alfalfa sprouts</strong> contain a substance called saponin, which is thought to obstruct and inhibit the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries</li>
</ul>
<p>If you have high cholesterol or a family tendency towards atherosclerosis it is best to avoid processed and prepared foods, fried food, food containing animal fats or animal products, high-fat dairy products and food containing either saturated fat or trans fats. Research has revealed the key to lowering LDL cholesterol is a healthy, balanced diet that incorporates plenty of soluble fiber and at least five portions of fruit or vegetables a day. This combined with regular cardiovascular exercise should help keep the heart healthy and provide numerous other health benefits as well.</p>

However, avoid exhausting yourself too much in exercise. Avoid going beyond 45 minutes. Remember, it has to be done in a regular basis. </p>

Implement this by intensifying some parts of the training. If you are into jogging or running, increase speed every 5 minutes for at least a minute or two. You can also simply enjoy going around the neighborhood as you get your system healthier by the minute. It is possible to make some friends among the people who also do their exercises.</p>
<p>Be consistent and stick with the training once you have started it. This is the only way that cardio training will benefit your body and your health in the long run.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Oh treadmill, how I love thee.  I can always depend on my treadmill to achieve weight loss and muscle tone.  I have had a couple of different treadmills through the years and I have always been able to attain my goals with this outstanding piece of equipment.  I have gone from a dedicated runner, to couch potato, to overweight and back and the only variable that did not work all the time was me!</p>
<p><img src="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/7200prod-300x267.jpg" alt="Trimline 7200SS Treadmill" title="Trimline 7200SS Treadmill" width="300" height="267" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-203" />There is a reason the first piece of equipment you see on “Biggest Loser” is a treadmill, or why there is a line at the gym waiting for this coveted piece of equipment.  They work!  The act of running itself is fantastic, but with running you have many variables, (i.e. rain, potholes, stranger danger, and the occasional scary animal).  Many people associate running with injuries and joint issues, and unfortunately this can be true of running outside due to the high impact on your joints and muscles. With a treadmill, you are able to take all of those variables away, and still have the purest form of cardiovascular exercise in your own home. Running on a treadmill allows you to control your environment with cushioned and flat running surface. </p>
<p><q>I am able to lower my blood pressure, heighten my lung capacity, tone and build muscles, lose weight</q>Treadmills also are able to accommodate any fitness level from the first day you begin, to training for a 5k.  There is no learning curve involved at any time with exercising on a treadmill.  That fact alone makes this a perfect machine.  Many people will get frustrated quickly with a piece of equipment they are uncomfortable or unable to use.  On a treadmill, all you must do is walk and you are “working out”.  No need for a trainer, instructions, or nerves.</p>
<p>In my personal experience, I have become to depend on my treadmill almost as much as my Doctor.  I am able to lower my blood pressure, heighten my lung capacity, tone and build muscles, lose weight, and motivate myself to move.</p>
<p>Make an investment in yourself</p>
<p>When you are ready to make this wise investment, there are a few pointers to consider when purchasing a treadmill.  It is always a good idea to talk to a friend or relative about their treadmill, and what they like and don’t about the features they have on their home or commercial equipment.  Also, go to several gyms and fitness stores and actually walk or run on several of the treadmills available to get a true feel for the structure and performance of each piece of equipment.  Listed below are the top 10 questions you need to ask yourself and a sales person prior to choosing the perfect treadmill for you.</p>
<ol>
<li>What Kind of Weight capacity does the treadmill offer?</li>
<li>What type of features are you interested in for your workouts?  Are you interested in a heart rate monitor?  Do you need different workout programs to vary your workouts?</li>
<li>What kind of space are you willing to allot for storage?  Do you need to be able to fold the equipment, or can you have a traditional style.</li>
<li>What is the speed on the treadmill?  How fast and slow does the machine move, and what is the speed that you require?</li>
<li>What type of warranty does the treadmill offer, and what type of ongoing maintenance does it need?</li>
<li>What is the “continuous duty” of the treadmill?  You really need to look for a 1.5 to 2.5 HP to insure you are getting a solid motor.</li>
<li>What price are you willing to pay for a treadmill?</li>
<li>Noise, do you need a quite model due to children in home, or a sleeping spouse?  Do you want to hear a TV over the sound of the treadmill?  DC motors are usually the more quite option.</li>
<li>Are you comfortable with the length and width of the treadmill?  Can you move your arms freely, and is the deck long enough to accommodate your stride?</li>
<li>Is there a safety key, or an emergency shut off?  If you have children this is an important option to have available.</li>
