			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>My second most important piece of equipment for exercising and fat burning is a good quality heart rate monitor. If you want to increase the effectiveness of your exercise, get more out of each workout, and spend less time with better results, then you owe it to yourself to check out today&#8217;s heart rate monitors.</p>

The chest strap is worn around your chest (naturally), just a few centimeters below your breast. It contains an electronic sensor that is able to detect electrical activity of your heart and transmit it to the receiver, or brain of the machine &#8211; just like an ECG. The chest transmitter continually senses your heartbeat and constantly transmits that information to a display monitor, which is generally attached to your wrist like a watch.</p>
<p>The watch can be worn as a regular sports watch, and when not connected to the transmitter strap, will still give you time of day, alarms, stopwatch functions, etc.  </p>
<p>If you are planning to buy a quality heart rate monitor, one of the more popular manufacturers around is Polar. Polar technology has been around for two decades now and the company has achieved the status of being the industry leader in the heart rate monitors field. They have different series for heart rate monitors, ranging from beginners and intermediates to professional athletes. You can also choose your heart rate monitor from different categories, depending on what your needs are: Cardiac Rehab, Jogging, Cycling, Swimming (this includes a waterproof monitor-watch), Fitness, Weight Management and so forth.</p>
<p>You can of course purchase one of the lower-end models but low quality heart monitors can lead to inaccurate results and that sort of defeats the purpose of buying one &#8211; and what price do place on your health.</p>
<p><q>increase the effectiveness of your exercise and get more out of each workout</q>By monitoring your heart rate you can reduce the chance of injury from over training and know you are getting a great workout by staying in the &#8220;<a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">target zone</a>&#8220;, drastically increasing the efficiency and benefits of your workouts. </p>
<p>One of the first things you need to know when using a heart rate monitor is what your maximum heart rate is.  The standard formula used is to subtract your age from 220, however, we also provide a more accurate method, the <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">Karvonen formula</a> .  You can then calculate at what percentage of maximum you should be exercising at.</p>

<p>When doing cardiovascular training, research says exercising at <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">60-70%</a> of your maximum heart rate will be best for fat loss and to build endurance, while exercising in the <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="heart rate target zone">70-80%</a> of maximum range will increase your fitness.</p>
<p>As I tend to focus primarily on cycling for my cardio/fat burning workouts I purchased a Polar S710 cycling heart rate monitor. I also purchased the speed/distance and cadence sensors that go with this unit and the infra-red serial connector for uploading my exercise information to a computer.</p>
<p>Although it seemed like an expensive purchase at the time, it does provide me with an incredible amount of information (see images below) allowing me to specifically tailor my exercise programs to maximise my fat burning. I have been using this Polar heart rate monitor for the past 8 years, so if I amortize the initial cost over that time frame, then it is quite affordable &#8211; working out at less than $100.00 per year.</p>
<p>It certainly pays to shop around for a good deal, especially on the internet. If my memory serves me correctly I purchased my Polar heart rate monitor and cycling sensors through the internet from Scotland of all places.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Okay, as promised I am going to go through my personal list of must have equipment for optimum weight loss (fat loss).</p>
<p>The first item of must have equipment for me is a good bicycle (not an exercise bike), but a real bicycle for cycling outdoors. While I know that <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/fitness-exercise/exercise-fitness-exercise/the-joys-of-walking" title="The joy of walking">walking</a> is one of the best exercises that you can do, it just doesn&#8217;t do it for me &#8211; I find it somewhat boring and a bit of a task, whereas with cycling, I love the freedom of being able to travel much greater distances, see more of the world around me and get a significantly better fat burn for the time involved in exercising.</p>
<p><img src="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/hybrid-city-bike-300x189.jpg" alt="Hybrid/City Bike" title="Hybrid/City Bike" width="300" height="189" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-521" /><q>I can also burn around twice as many calories riding than I can walking for the same amount of time</q>Plus when riding a bicycle I can get my heart rate up into the <a href="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/health-and-fitness-tools/heart-rate-zone-calculator" title="Heart rate zones">fat burning zone</a> quite easily, even at a moderate pace, whereas with walking, I find it quite difficult to get my heart rate up to that same level without resorting  jogging intermittently. I can also burn around twice as many calories riding than I can walking for the same amount of time.</p>
<p>At the moment I have two bicycles, a hybrid bike and a road bike. The hybrid bike I use for my shorter rides (workouts) and the road bike I use for my longer rides (usually an hour or more). I had previously owned a mountain bike, but like more than 75% of mountain bike owners, I rarely used it off road- It was meant for maneuvering rocky areas and hills, not flat concrete bike trails so the suspension forks, nobbly tyres and etc. became a hindrance when riding on the roads &#8211; hence the switch to a hybrid or city bike.</p>
<p>Make sure that your bicycle is the right size for you or it can become quite uncomfortable due to your incorrect body positioning, similarly, a good quality comfortable saddle (seat) is also important if you are planning to spend some time riding. You should be able to ride for a couple of hours without any pain or discomfort after. A good pair of cycling shorts (with chamois insert) is also highly recommended to reduce or minimise any discomfort in the crutch area. </p>
<p>At least one water bottle cage or carrier is also a must for your water bottle(s) to ensure you keep yourself well hydrated during your rides &#8211; drinking water at least every 20 minutes is recommended. I also have a small Cateye cycling computer attached to both bicycles, so that I can check my speed, average speed, time and distance traveled during and after a ride. </p>
<p>I also use and highly recommend a a heart rate monitor which includes a chest strap and a wrist unit that measures duration of exercise, time in “the zone” (your target heart rate to accomplish fat burning), average and maximum heart rate, and calories burned &#8211; but I will cover this item in more detail in a later post.</p>

<p>Bike riding is a fun part of my exercise and weight loss regimen, helping me to burn calories at an accelerated rate &#8211; so I suggest checking out a hybrid bike and customizing it to your needs.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many people in this day and age know that the key to a long life is to eat healthy and perform regular exercise.  This fact has made gym memberships and home health equipment surge in the last decade.  Many people choose the latter due to the fact of ease of use in their own home and not having to deal with gym rats.  </p>
<p><img src="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/exercise_bike-277x300.jpg" alt="Exercise Bike" title="Exercise Bike" width="277" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-297" />There are hundreds of types of exercise equipment on the market, but the most popular are treadmills and exercise bikes.  The major problem most people find with at home exercise equipment is overcoming boredom.  The only thing that seems to work on boredom on a treadmill is a TV or watching an exercise program.</p>
<p>The same is true on an exercise bike, but some bikes allow you to plug into a TV or video game so that you may visually pedal thru a course.  Recumbent bikes allow your hands to be free so that you may use the phone, magazine or book.  </p>
<p><strong>Safety on a Treadmill or Bike</strong><br />
If safety is a major concern due to age or injury, obviously the exercise bike is the safest for either.  Not only while on a treadmill do you have to worry about a misstep, but also if you have children they can endanger the user or themselves.  If a ball or any other item is placed under the deck and belt the treadmill can abruptly stop, or little fingers and hands can be hurt by putting them in places they don’t belong.  </p>
<p>With treadmills you also have to remember that you are putting much more stress on your joints.  With an upright exercise bike users may stress your back while trying to reach handle bars.  Recumbent bikes are said to sometimes improve existing back pain by forcing proper posture and giving you support while exercising.  Exercising on a bike compared to a treadmill will reduce joint stress and injury.<br />
<strong><br />
Calorie Burn </strong><br />
On average a treadmill will burn more calories per hour than an exercise bike.  NordicTrack conducted a study using different types of exercise equipment and they found that at the same intensity the treadmill and ski machine burned more calories per hour than any other piece of equipment.  </p>
<p>If you are interested in losing weight, a treadmill is the way to go!  If you are a healthy individual with no joint problems or health problems you can expect to lose about 750 calories per hour on a treadmill compared to 550 calories on a bike.  The key to losing weight is thru vigorous activity which a treadmill can allow. </p>
<p><strong>Conclusion </strong><br />
Both exercise bikes and treadmills are wonderful options for anyone interested in losing weight or improving health.  The major decision is what you are truly interested in achieving, and if you feel that you will be able to stick with your program long term.  Long term success is determined by long term usage, so pick wisely, or even better choose both if your wallet can afford the investment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Oh treadmill, how I love thee.  I can always depend on my treadmill to achieve weight loss and muscle tone.  I have had a couple of different treadmills through the years and I have always been able to attain my goals with this outstanding piece of equipment.  I have gone from a dedicated runner, to couch potato, to overweight and back and the only variable that did not work all the time was me!</p>
<p><img src="http://savvyhealthfitness.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/7200prod-300x267.jpg" alt="Trimline 7200SS Treadmill" title="Trimline 7200SS Treadmill" width="300" height="267" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-203" />There is a reason the first piece of equipment you see on “Biggest Loser” is a treadmill, or why there is a line at the gym waiting for this coveted piece of equipment.  They work!  The act of running itself is fantastic, but with running you have many variables, (i.e. rain, potholes, stranger danger, and the occasional scary animal).  Many people associate running with injuries and joint issues, and unfortunately this can be true of running outside due to the high impact on your joints and muscles. With a treadmill, you are able to take all of those variables away, and still have the purest form of cardiovascular exercise in your own home. Running on a treadmill allows you to control your environment with cushioned and flat running surface. </p>
<p><q>I am able to lower my blood pressure, heighten my lung capacity, tone and build muscles, lose weight</q>Treadmills also are able to accommodate any fitness level from the first day you begin, to training for a 5k.  There is no learning curve involved at any time with exercising on a treadmill.  That fact alone makes this a perfect machine.  Many people will get frustrated quickly with a piece of equipment they are uncomfortable or unable to use.  On a treadmill, all you must do is walk and you are “working out”.  No need for a trainer, instructions, or nerves.</p>
<p>In my personal experience, I have become to depend on my treadmill almost as much as my Doctor.  I am able to lower my blood pressure, heighten my lung capacity, tone and build muscles, lose weight, and motivate myself to move.</p>
<p>Make an investment in yourself</p>
<p>When you are ready to make this wise investment, there are a few pointers to consider when purchasing a treadmill.  It is always a good idea to talk to a friend or relative about their treadmill, and what they like and don’t about the features they have on their home or commercial equipment.  Also, go to several gyms and fitness stores and actually walk or run on several of the treadmills available to get a true feel for the structure and performance of each piece of equipment.  Listed below are the top 10 questions you need to ask yourself and a sales person prior to choosing the perfect treadmill for you.</p>
<ol>
<li>What Kind of Weight capacity does the treadmill offer?</li>
<li>What type of features are you interested in for your workouts?  Are you interested in a heart rate monitor?  Do you need different workout programs to vary your workouts?</li>
<li>What kind of space are you willing to allot for storage?  Do you need to be able to fold the equipment, or can you have a traditional style.</li>
<li>What is the speed on the treadmill?  How fast and slow does the machine move, and what is the speed that you require?</li>
<li>What type of warranty does the treadmill offer, and what type of ongoing maintenance does it need?</li>
<li>What is the “continuous duty” of the treadmill?  You really need to look for a 1.5 to 2.5 HP to insure you are getting a solid motor.</li>
<li>What price are you willing to pay for a treadmill?</li>
<li>Noise, do you need a quite model due to children in home, or a sleeping spouse?  Do you want to hear a TV over the sound of the treadmill?  DC motors are usually the more quite option.</li>
<li>Are you comfortable with the length and width of the treadmill?  Can you move your arms freely, and is the deck long enough to accommodate your stride?</li>
<li>Is there a safety key, or an emergency shut off?  If you have children this is an important option to have available.</li>
</ol>

<p>All of these questions, if answered correctly by you and your salesperson, will begin a beautiful relationship with the right treadmill.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Walking is one of the most natural, everyday movements that an individual can make. For years, this simple act has been believed to help improve cardiovascular health, reduce stress and burn calories at the same time. Because not everyone has the convenience or the safety of walking outdoors, treadmills are designed to offer the same benefits without having to leave home.</p>

The first is a manual treadmill, which is powered solely by the individual. This device is not programmable and, therefore, is designed to keep up with the speed of the individual rather than the other way around. An electronic treadmill, on the other hand, can be programmed for the individual to keep up with the pace of the machine. With varying speeds and positions, electric treadmills can be designed to provide a slow or brisk walk at a flat or sloped angle.</p>
<p><q>individuals do not have to walk outside in order to get the benefits of a regular walking routine</q>A recent study divided individuals into two different groups, one of which participated in 30 minutes of exercising on treadmills while the other group spent 30 minutes resting. Each of the two group&#8217;s progress was monitored during the treatment which, at the conclusion, showed that both groups experienced a reduction in negative feelings, stress and tension. The group that spent 30 minutes training on the treadmills, however, also admitted to feeling an improvement in overall well-being. According to this study, walking is not only good for physical health, but proved to be beneficial for reducing stress and improving overall feelings of wellness.</p>
<p>While the study adds credence to the theory that walking is a positive exercise activity overall, it also lends truth to the idea that individuals do not have to walk outside in order to get the benefits of a regular walking routine. Treadmills are designed with indoor fitness in mind, which was the equipment of choice used in the aforementioned study. The use of a treadmill is especially beneficial during harsh winter months at times when walking outdoors may be slippery, in areas that are unsafe to walk or for individuals who simply prefer to exercise at home. Walking is believed to aid in the reduction of stress, the fight against obesity, cardiovascular disease and may be the most convenient exercise in existence.</p>
